An announcement by Telstra has been made that signals the end of their 3G Mobile Network.
The plan is to have closed the 3G Network by June 2024 to enable the roll out of their 5G Mobile Network.
The next 4 years will see Telstra begin encouraging the migration of current 3G customers over to the 4G Network. The plan then to re-purpose the cellular spectrum and expand their 4G & 5G coverage.
Telstra’s head of Network & IT Nikos Katinkas has reportedly said that Telstra is ready to replace 3G equipment with 5G, thus allowing the company to maintain 3G services for the next 4.5 years.
Telstra is the only telecommunications company in Australia to provide an end date for it’s 3G network. Optus & Vodafone are yet to reveal their shutdown dates however the writing is well and truly on the wall for the future of 3G services.
Planning your Migration to 4G Alarm Communications
While Telstra’s 3G Network Closure is slated for July 2024 we have had many customer’s already who have been required to move to a 4G alarm monitoring device. This appears to be due to a degradation of the 3G signal in some areas. We suspect that maintaining the integrity and signal strength of 3G network is not a priority as 4G & 5G technology is implemented and now available in many areas. Our advice is to move to a 4G option within the next 12 to 24 months. As suggested above this may be required sooner if your 3G service declines to the point whereby alarm communications are affected.
Cost of Migration
Migrating from 3G to 4G alarm communications is a simple and relatively inexpensive process. A simple hardware update is all that is required. Typically a technician will have the upgrade completed in about an hour.
